Prediction of primary tumor from brain metastases using FTIR imaging
Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scientists from Germany were able to differentiate between carcinoma, normal tissue and necrosis, and determine the primary tumour of brain metastasis. Using support vector machines and a training set of known primary tumours, it was possible to predict the primary tumours of 4 independent specimens using the FTIR images. The authors hope the method can be used ‘to complement histopathological tools for brain tissue diagnosis.’
