Thermo Electron EstablishesNew Center of Excellence for Elemental Speciation Analysis at Pau University in France

27-Sep-2004

Thermo Electron Corporation has concluded a collaboration agreement with the Biogeochemistry, Ultra Trace and Isotopic Analysis group at the University of Pau in France in order to create a Center of Excellence for speciated analysis techniques. This collaboration will establish, promote, communicate and advance the analysis of speciated elements in support of sustainable industrial development.

Speciation is increasingly important in a wide range of analytical areas. The determination of the chemical form of metals within bio-medical, environmental, nutritional, industrial and geochemical samples is essential for the correct evaluation of their beneficial or toxic effects and hence their potential impact on the environment and mankind. The new Center of Excellence is primarily targeted at environmental and biomedical elemental analysts interested in the measurement of speciated metals. The Center has been created to provide teaching and training at all levels and to expand the use of elemental speciation techniques as well as to establish robust and routine laboratory procedures.

This unique collaboration will champion the emerging field of elemental speciation analysis. Advanced research projects will be undertaken to develop routine laboratory procedures. The multi-disciplinary team of experts from the Ultra Trace Group at the University of Pau has already developed robust extraction and analysis methodologies to enable quantitative determinations of toxic selenium, arsenic, chromium, methyl, mercury and organo-tin species in environmental and biological sample matrices.

A demonstration and sample analysis facility has been created to further support the use of speciation measurements utilizing Thermo's new HPLC-ICP-MS and GC-ICP-MS packages released at Pittcon 2004.
